What’s Happening at the Library?
LIBRARY TO CELEBRATE 10TH ANNIVERSARY IN NEW BUILDING
During the last week of August, 1998 the Henry Carter Hull Library opened its doors at 10 Killingworth Turnpike for the first time. Back then, hundreds of community members helped move all the books and equipment from the small-but-charming West Main Street location into the spacious, newly redesigned building. Loyal patrons from all over the shoreline have enjoyed the library’s growth in its collections, programs and services. Now it’s time to celebrate both our space and the people who use!
Here are the activities planned by the staff and Board of Trustees to mark our first decade on Rt. 81:
- Free HCH Library Reusable Grocery Bags
- Why I Love MY Henry Carter Hull Library contest.
Children and adults will be able to present the reasons why their public library enriches their lives. Submissions can be in the form of essays, videos or slide shows. Submissions must be received by 5:00 pm, Friday, August 1, 2008. “Celebrity” judges will choose the winners. Categories: Children, Grades 1-4; Preteens, Grades 5-8; Teens, Grades 9-12, and Adults. Official rules can be picked up at the library or found on the library’s website, www.hchlibrary.org. The winners will be announced, and their testimonials read/viewed, on August 26 at 4:00 pm.
- Extreme Playhouse Makeover Contest
The playhouse in the preschooler’s playroom is showing its age. YOU are showing your creativity when you enter this makeover challenge. Here’s how it works: Submit your plan for the redesign of the playhouse by June 30, 2008. Develop a new vision, including furnishings. It must be both sturdy and intriguing enough to stimulate the imaginations of young children for another decade or so. Proposals will be judged by a design expert and early childhood educator.
The winner will be announced on August 1 and given $100.00 rehabilitate the playhouse. The finished playhouse will be presented to the public on August 26 at 4:30pm.
- Presenting: The Teen Room
Teens will now have a special place to call their own at the Henry Carter Hull Library. All summer long we will be transforming space on the second floor into an area where teens can study, email, socialize and read. We will have a suggestion box available for teens to offer ideas about what their area should be named.
The teen area, either in-progress or finished, will be viewed on August 26 at 4:00pm.
- BINKY’S BACK!!!!
Families with children aged 8 and younger are invited to bring their picnic supper to the library lawn on Tuesday, August 26 at 5:30pm. Lemonade will be provided by the library. At 6:00pm, BINKY will perform!! You know this group as the talented MusicTogether teachers who played to a standing room only crowd last March.
All library programs are free. Questions: call 860-669-2342.
